Hello Vicki, Lindsay and Sarah;
It was quite sometime ago that I met Roger. Thinking about it, it’s 40 years ago, 1981 to be exact, that we met on campus of what was then known as Red River Community College. We were both from the Parkland region of Manitoba, Roger from Ethelbert and myself from Roblin. The technology stream was our field of choice so we shared many a class together. Our friendship formed and our group of friends expanded to include many of our fellow students that had like interests and goals.
In year 2 of our studies, Roger, Ken B., Grant S. and myself rented a duplex together. We all enjoyed each other’s company through the good times and the bad times. As a student there will be times of each but looking back at it, the bad times really weren’t that bad. The good times however; that’s another story.
It was sometime during the 2nd year of study that Vicki entered the picture. I cannot remember which member of our “clan” brought Vicki around but it was either Kim L. or Joanne B. Either way she must have made a very favourable impression on Roger.
As time went on we drifted apart but Roger would crop up in my thoughts from time to time - where is he, what’s he up to and who is he doing it with?
I cannot say what led me to search for Roger today but I am most grateful that I did. I am saddened beyond words to learn of Roger’s health issues that ultimately led to his death. I am however happy to know that he had a life well lived and that he has a family that truly loves and admires him.
Job well done Roger.
To Vicki, Lindsay and Sarah, my condolences on the loss of your husband, your partner in crime and your father.
Rest In Peace my friend.
Regards,
Lloyd Ballard

I was so sad to see this, and it seems like only yesterday we were watching our girls play basketball in a school gym. Roger was such a kind and soft spoken intelligent man and I'm so very sorry for your loss. May memories of his life keep you all strong.

Hi Vicki, Lindsay and Sarah.
Roger is an incredible bright light in our world. I always felt warmed by his gentle, calm and reflective ways of approaching life and relationships. His obituary is absolutely beautiful and brought me back to his humility and warmth. Although we lost touch over the years, I have always remembered Roger fondly with all the kindness and caring he exudes. I have also always been touched by the deep love I witnessed between Vicki and Roger, and know these past years have been difficult for you both. Knowing both Vicki and Roger, I have no doubt you both met this struggle in your journeys together with love, care, openness and humour. Your dad was an amazing person Lindsay and Sarah, and it's lovely to think about him living on in you two.
I am thinking of you all during this profound period of your lives. Thank you for creating a recording of Roger's service.

What a beautiful celebration! It truly shows what kind of man Roger was! We can attest to that with the different sport/school events that we shared together with our daughters. One that sticks out in my mind is our commutes to the Dalmeny hockey rink and I think possibly because it was a time that we were able to have non interrupted time to learn about Roger’s love…his wife and girls. May your memories of him always stay forefront in your hearts! Cheers to a wonderful man!

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Roger a number of years ago in the College of Arts and Science. He was a gem of a colleague - always kind, always willing to share his knowledge and experience and always funny. Really funny. My thoughts and sympathy go out to all those who knew and loved him, especially his family who he couldn't talk about without a smile on his face.

This is such sad news. We would cross paths with Roger and Vicki episodically over the years and it was always such a distinct pleasure. This life ended far too soon but Roger could say what very few people can - he left this world better than he entered it.
Roger, you were a class act: intelligent, kind, witty, aware, mindful. We have lost a gentleman, and a gentle man. See you in the mystic.

I knew Roger when I worked at the Canadian Co-operative Association. Our paths often crossed at region meetings, member annual meetings, conferences, and research gatherings at the Centre for Co-operative Studies. How fortunate I feel to be among the many who knew and loved Roger as a colleague and friend. His dry and wicked sense of humour could leave me laughing long after a comment or joke had passed. I was grateful for Roger's humour and humanity that lightened some of the longer days trying to secure funding or manage multiple projects in our co-operative associations with few resources. I always thought Roger was one of the smartest guys I knew. Maybe that's why his wit could be so precious.
My deepest condolences to all who loved and knew you Roger. I will fondly cherish the memory of you showing me a photograph of the shores of Lake Winnipeg that meant the world to you. May all the young people who participated in the Co-op Youth Program at SCA be our future co-op leaders. Thank you and "bye" for now.

Roger was a wonderful person and thoughtful co-operator. His contributions to co-operatives (and our organization) were many, from the local to international level.
I'm sure, Vicki, you remember the year Roger was awarded a Saskatchewan Co-operative Merit Award. Here's a link to the video from this recognition, in case anyone would like to view it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I4susxfRyI
On behalf of Saskatchewan Co-operative Association, we extend our condolences to Vicki, Lindsay, and Sarah.

Although we are so sad, and find it very hard to say Farewell to Roger, we are forever grateful for the chance to do so. We are also so very thankful for the gift of our friendship over the last 34 years. There have been so many laughs, tears of joy and tears of sadness. We will certainly miss him, and our hearts ache for Vicki, Lindsay and Sarah.
When we met in 1987, we were just some “mature” students who came together at the U of S. In that first year I think we needed each other for support since we were restarting our lives through education. That time in university led to the four of us gathering for nachos at Amigos or beers at Bud’s after classes, or just walking home together from U of S.
In the many years that followed, there were many more walks, a few more drinks, lots of talks – fun, serious and philosophical – and more special times over meals, as you would expect when four close souls get together.
The good times continued over the years with visits in Saskatoon, Regina and North Vancouver. Being able to relax together wherever we were was very special. There was Mexi Veggies in Waskesiu after a day of cross-country skiing, and that stinky fish left in their van after a weekend of camping also in Waskesiu when Roger was doing his student teaching in St. Brieux. And we celebrated milestones by painting dishes and many years later commemorative beer glasses. We have waked the riverbanks in Saskatoon, stumbled on a golf course at Redberry Lake, beachcombed on the West Coast, skied Lake Louise, snorkeled with sea turtles, zip-lined through lush jungle and watched whales in Maui. We even celebrated Canada Day in Vancouver, complete with face tattoos for the girls. All very special times to remember.
Through all that, we all got jobs and our lives became more complicated. But our friendship remained despite the miles between us and the changes that come with time. We were lucky to have travelled together but it was the company that made it special. That Barrell of Monkeys Tournament in Regina and glass painting in Leavenworth was fun for sure, but sitting in a basement watching TV and eating cookies was just as special.
Our last time together on the road was Victoria, and although time had changed our lives again, we still found a way to enjoy our time and have fun. We will cherish forever all of those memories made together over the 34 years.
Roger was an amazing human being who took responsibility to make the world a better place. We will miss him dearly.
Memory Eternal our friend, and always in our hearts,
John and Laura
