I always remember starting at City Park Collegiate when Laurel had just moved on to Nutana Collegiate. She was so generously thoughtful and caring about how I was doing as a baby teacher at City Park. Her encouragement, quiet yet gentle smile and ability to listen to my concerns about my new teaching job were incredibly welcome. I was amazed at her thoughtfulness during the 10 years I was there. Later when I went to Aden Bowman collegiate I ended up teaching her daughter Julia. Laurel had that incredibly insightful and caring manner which helped inspire her coworkers, other professionals and students. Heartfelt condolences to her family.

I am so sorry to hear of Laurel's passing. I feel very fortunate that I was able to work with Laurel at Nutana Collegiate for many years and that she came into my life when I was a brand new teacher. I consider her a mentor and cherished colleague. I learned so much from her. She seemed to have a bottomless well of patience, compassion, and understanding, for both students and the adults she worked with. She brought so much light and love into the world and her legacy will live on in so many changed lives.

I will always cherish the years working and learning alongside Laurel as counsellors at Nutana Collegiate. The stories are endless and the memories so precious of this extra special lady, mentor and friend. Compassionate, kind, fun-loving and so supportive of everyone - her door was always open. Laurel cared so deeply for the well-being of young people and their futures. She had a remarkable ability to bring out the best in them and, truthfully, in everyone. Laurel was an inspiration in every way, she was simply “The Best”. We will all miss this dear lady, her joyful nature, her beautiful smile and her love for family and friends. My deepest condolences to Rick and family.

My deepest condolences Rick and family. Laurel was one of a kind! I had the privilege to be part of the Riverview/ City Park crew with Laurel and so many other inspiring staff! As the new, young teacher, Laurel took me under her wing and guided us all through some unbelievable times. Her steadfast belief in all kids and their potential continues to inspire so many colleagues. We cherished our almost yearly reunions for almost 35 years. Her stories of students, infectious laughter and uplifting stories of family and friends will be dearly missed! We loved Laurel and will hold her in our cherished memories forever. Hugs to the whole family, the world has lost a unique and special soul but heaven has gained a beautiful angel!

I want to express my sincerest condolences to the family of an amazing individual. I was fortunate to learn so very much from Laurel as we served together on committees that were created to support students, families, staff members, and the wider community during times of loss and sadness. She was a rock during those times, yet always so tender and compassionate. Laurel was an advocate for youth and her legacy will live on for many years to come. It was a life of service. She will be missed.

I had the amazing honour to work with and learn from Laurel. In my office I have a crystal heart I hold and look at often, especially when I an trying to work through something. Laurel told me to always lead from heart, always keep an open mind, and always trust my gut. I aspired to be her and loved the amazing person she was.

I’m bawling my eyes out at hearing this news. Laurel and I both ended our careers at Nutana Collegiate, she in guidance and me in administration, but we were dear friends for our entire careers. Our children started kindergarten together and we loved each other’s as our own. She was one in a million and those of us who knew her were truly blessed.
