I saw this site today (Jan. 3, 2023). I was Bob's postdoc from 1997 to 2000. My first postdoc in the US didn't quite work out. My Ph.D. advisor collaborated with Bob. I called Bob and he offered me a postdoc position in his lab over the phone. After six days of driving from Baltimore to Edmonton, I started in early June of 1997. Bob gave me a lot of freedom to choose the research topic and I enjoyed working with him tremendously. In May 2000, he and I visited U. Colorado together, a very memorable trip. I was surprised by how fast he drove. Then, in late summer of 2000, he moved to Colorado and I moved to Utah. I met Bon twice again, once in Toronto in 2005 and ten years later in Denver. I still have the PENCE T-shirt with me. I cherish the time I spent in his lab and the friendships with him and members of his group. It saddens me greatly to learn that Bob has passed away.

I was so shocked and sorry to hear of Bob's passing. We were such close buddies all through school and college. We had such great times in the summer at the old Riversdale swimming pool.
What a great athlete he was and what an accomplished life he had both personally and professionally.
He will certainly be missed and my deepest sympathy to all of his family

I met Bob in 1976 when I started speedskating at the oval in Edmonton. He and Willem Langenberg spent time helping me perfect the science of speedskating as it is a little trickier than regular hockey skates. Bob also chauffeured me home from the first Alberta winter games in Banff National Park where we skated in amazing conditions on the Bow River. I was lucky enough to win a bronze medal in those games that ultimately had a huge effect on my life and possibly set in motion many positive changes to the building blocks of my future. My condolences to Phyllis and the Hodges family. He was a huge personality that will be missed .

This photo was taken at a swimming pool in Fort Garry MB in 1960. Ken Halliday, Bob and myself were much younger then with our lives ahead of us. My memories of Bob are all positive, he was a good friend and a fierce competitor. The many hours spent in the Avenue H pool, training, goofing off, and doing some part time lifeguarding as we got older are all part of warm memories. In the 60 plus years that have passed since that picture was taken our lives have gone in many directions. Those early years will always be a source of happiness for me, and Bob is one of the reasons for that. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Bob. I met Bob while I was a PhD student at the University of Waterloo and he offered me a post-doctoral fellowship on the spot. He offered me my first job and I am forever grateful for both. He taught me how to write scientific papers and I use his “technique” to this day. I thoroughly enjoyed our many times having beers at Earl’s where the conversations ranged from hockey to peptide science to who could drive the ball further. While Bob was always an eager participant, Phyllis it was my fault for Bob coming home late!
Bob was always up for a challenge. Our golf games had the pressure of the Ryder Cup as Bob would bet me I couldn’t sink that putt. He decided I should learn how to speed skate so we went to the oval and I wore his skates and finally got the hang of it. Somehow he thought it would be a good idea that we should race, he in hockey skates and me in his speed skates. No need to say who won
Bob was a friend and mentor. He was a giant in sports and science. I have many fond memories of him I am deeply saddened by his passing. My sincerest condolescences to Phyllis and his family.

I am deeply saddened to hear that Bob Hodges has passed away. I worked with Bob for about 25 years at both UAlberta and the University of Colorado in Denver. He was a great friend and a great scientist. His lab was always a centre of excellence and achievement. However, as these pictures will attest, he was also a guy who liked to get together with his staff and students to relax on Friday afternoons....beer was always a focal point. It didn't matter what you did in his lab, everyone was invited: secretaries, grad students, postdocs, technicians, research associates and many times people from other labs. Bob was one of those who made the Biochemistry Department at UAlberta a family. I last saw Bob and Phyllis in March 2020 and will miss not having the opportunity to repeat that experience. Rest well my friend.

So very sorry to learn about Bobby Hodges, an old Saskatoon friend. Spent many freezing winter nights circling the oval at Westfield Park and many early summer mornings swimming laps at Riverside Pool with Bob. Many many fond memories of Bob and sister Barb. My sincere condolences to his family. He was a champion in everything he did.

I posted this picture of the Optimist swim team from the Avenue H pool. Bob is in the middle - you can tell it is him from his usual huge smile! Many fond memories of those days - early morning training in an upheated and less than sanitary pool - but it does not diminish my fond memories of those days, and my friend Bob in particular. My condolences to Barb and the entire family.
