Obituary of Joyce Audrey Nilson

On March 8th, 2021, Joyce Audrey Nilson aged 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. 

Joyce (nee Morrow) was born in LaRiviere MB, graduated from the Winnipeg Business College and was working in Winnipeg when her sister Jay, invited her to Prince Albert for a visit and a blind date with Carl Nilson. This date brought about a deeply loving marriage of 60 years with Carl.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Tim (Arlene) and Terry (Brenda); daughter, Cathy; daughter-in-law, Marilyn; ten grandchildren, their spouses and twenty great-grandchildren; sister, Brenda (Doug) Blanco; and sister-in-law, Judy Morrow. She is predeceased by her husband, Carl (2008); son, Greg (2010); son-in-law, Frédéric Bielser (2012); brother, Walter Morrow; and her sister, Jay Grewcock. Joyce was raised in Pilot Mound MB by her parents Nina and Clarke Morrow.

Old time dancing was an enjoyable pastime of Joyce and Carl’s and they shared their talents by giving dance classes while residing in St Louis, Prince Albert and Kinistino. Joyce’s family and friends benefited from her expertise at baking - delicious pies, buns and other goodies that she shared generously.  Another quiet talent of Joyce’s was her knitting. She had a home business knitting raw wool Siwashs, and made family sweaters, hats, and slippers - many of which are still keep her family warm.

All who met Joyce quickly discovered how proud she was of her entire family – in all that they stood for and achieved. Not once did she turn down an opportunity to see a hockey, ball, or soccer game, swim meet, or attend a grandchild’s or great-grandchild’s dance, band, theatre performance or public lecture.

Joyce was well loved for her cheery smile, her genuineness, resilience and sense of adventure. How many 90-year-olds hop on a snowmobile or ATV for a journey in the forest with family, as she did regularly with zest and smiles? Enjoying life kept Joyce young at heart and physically active. She marvelled at life’s everyday gifts found in activities like sightseeing in Victoria, summer boat rides at the lakes, enjoying good food, and the simple pleasure of walking outdoors. 

In our hearts we will hold Joyce’s recent words “with love, remember the best times we shared” and “I have lived a rich life to the fullest.” We all shall deeply miss our Mom, Grandma, Joyce.
