To Lynne, Michelle and Jim,
I was very sad to hear that Colin has died. My husband, Mike Mellowes, and I knew him at Cambridge. Mike was also at Trinity whilst I was at Teachers College there. Colin and Mike shared rooms at Trinity, about 1959. We always found him very good company, very amusing and congenial. Mike and I were married in 1961 and emigrated to Australia in 1962 and so lost touch with Colin. I did know that he was at the University of Saskatchewan and at one time sent a letter to the university in an attempt to re-establish contact but it was not to be. A mutual friend pointed out Colin's obituary and it was pleasing to learn that he had led a fulfilling and satisfying life in Canada. That is the saddest bit for us as we have been to Canada many times in the last 40 years and it would have been fun to catch up.. Although his death was almost a year ago now, learning of it has saddened us both.
With real sympathy and all the best for the future.
Judy Mellowes

I am sorry to hear of Professor Sargent’s passing. I just noticed it in my “Green and White” UofS alumni magazine this morning and although it’s been six months, I would like to share something.
I went through engineering from 1982-1986 and during that time there was somewhere around 5% women in the college. Professor Sargent was a wonderful source of support for the women students. In fourth year, I was the student in charge of the Big Sister/Little Sister program that Professor Sargent set up so that on the first day of classes, every freshman female engineering student had a ‘Big Sister’, another female engineering student with at least one year more experience, to talk to. It was a wonderful program that helped many women students, thanks to Colin Sargent.
I am glad I had the privilege to get to know him.

We first met Colin in 1963 when he was a graduate student and I was a visiting scientist in the University of Cambridge. He was the most interesting of all the people we met there. He even taught me to play squash, He later came to work in my research group in Dayton and he lived near us in the same little village. So, we had many lively discussions both at work and at home. Colin loved to discuss and he would join in to any discussion about any subject at any time. And he would contribute! He was a bright light with a warm heart. He is missed both personally and professionally.

Colin Sargent was friend and colleague for several decades in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. His skills as a teacher, an engineer, and his overall goodness as a human being made everyone’s life better. He will be missed.
When Colin arrived from Cambridge at the University of Saskatchewan he took up company with group of young, hot-shot mechanical profs that included Richard Burton and Greg Schoenau. I believe they shared an office, which is another story all together. There was an instance when Ehrle Brooks, one of the more senior faculty members, saw an opportunity to exploit the good nature and naevity of the young-guns at the college by getting them to insulate the floor of his cottage at Emma Lake in the early spring. If memory serves, Dr. Mohindar Sachdev also was volunteered for the weekend of work, which was obviously the result of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Anyone who has done this kind of project knows that working in a confined space with three other men putting insulation between floor joists is an unpleasant job. We don’t know much about what went on that weekend other than everyone arrived back at work looking like they had a little too much fun. Each participant had a different version of the event, and each seemed more ridiculous than the other. There were rumours that there may have been some nude cross-country skiing – yikes! We weren’t there so we just have to speculate. The end result was that the job was finished at next to no cost and everyone left smiling.
That was the kind of man Colin was. Everything he did turned out better than expected, he made sure everyone had a good experience in the process, and sometimes (although, not always) his methods were a little unconventional.
