Obituary of Tony Steinkey

It is with true sadness that the family of Tony Steinkey announce his passing on Feb. 11, 2021. Tony was taken too soon from us after a battle with Covid-19 that he contracted while receiving care in St.Paul’s hospital.  He was not ready to leave us yet, and he fought hard until the very end.  

Tony was born on June 29th, 1943 on the family homestead near Fox Valley, and was raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.  As the proud son of German-Russian immigrants, Tony learned the value of hard work at a very early age. This was a defining characteristic that shaped the path of his life.  He was determined to succeed, proud to provide for his family and never afraid to roll up his sleeves and work long hours.  Tony had the aptitude to fix anything with his strong, calloused hands and over the years he jokingly referred to himself as “MacGyver”.

As a young man Tony began his career working in the automotive bumper industry in Alberta.   His desire to work for himself brought him to Saskatoon where he started his own chrome-plating business – Provincial Plating Ltd., and in 1985 he opened the first galvanizing plant in Saskatchewan – Provincial Galvanizing Ltd.  Tony was proud of his accomplishments but always remained humble. Tony was well-respected in the industry and made many cherished work friendships throughout those years.

While Tony dedicated long hours to growing his business, he was also busy raising a family with his wife Sheila Haubrich.  Together they welcomed three children: Cathi, Lisa and Paul. Many happy memories were made as a family at the cabin at East Trout Lake during their 28 years of marriage.  East Trout Lake remained a life-long place of retreat for Tony; he spent many days hunting, fishing and relaxing up north.  Tony was fortunate to spend many winters away in the warm sunshine during his retired years at his home in Phoenix, Arizona with his partner Lorraine Lazar.

Tony was a son, a brother, a friend, a husband, a father, a grandfather, an entrepreneur, a successful businessman and above all else “THE BOSS”. His general nature remained unaltered by old age and declining health. His determination and strong will were evident throughout his life.  He will always remain the strongest and toughest man his children will ever know…right up until his final breath.

Tony is survived by his three children Cathi Robertson (Harold), Lisa Steinkey (Shaun Iversen), Paul Steinkey (Toby) and his six grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Cooper, Brett, Lachlan, Will and Ethan. He is also survived by his best friend Lorraine, his siblings, several nieces and nephews and many friends.  

A huge thank you goes out to our front-line workers for putting their lives and health at risk to care for our family members.  The heroic work of the staff at the RUH Covid unit was a gift. You cared for Tony when we could not be there, and for that we are eternally grateful.
