My deepest sympathies to all the Dean family. I have many fond memories of the times I spent at the Dean home, as a childhood friend of Kathy's. Such warmth, such kindness, such great hosts to an awkward girl. Sylvia (Steele) Besplug

I came to know Chris when, standing and waiting ... and waiting... for one of the two elevators to arrive at the main floor of the Arts Building at the U of S.. We were no doubt between classes, but as chance had it we exchanged information on scholarly interests and areas of teaching. Chris asked about the most recent election (whenever that was) and I quoted the few lines of Chaucer that I could remember from high school. We struck it off then, and although our paths did not cross often over the years, whenever they did we enjoyed a conversation. It was wonderful to have colleagues like Chris at the university.
Helen and I wish to extend our condolences to Jeanette and family.

Dear Jeanette, I am so sorry to learn of Chris’s death. He was a good man and a fine scholar. I took a class with him and he challenged me to be the best I could be. I respected him and am grateful. Dennis took one of his seniors classes in telling stories and legends from the Middle Ages and loved it. Said he felt cheated that he’d never heard them before in all his schooling. He enjoyed your camaraderie at the Camera Club. Please take whatever time you need to grieve and also take care of yourself. Terry

Jeanette and family: Very sorry to hear of Chris's death. You will miss him very much. I have known Chris since 1963, when I was a beginning Teaching Fellow in the M.A. program at Western and he was Dept Head at Middlesex College. He was kindly supportive of a novice teacher.

Professor Dean taught me more than he might have imagined when I was his student in 1968-69. A second-year student then, I was both naive about scholarship and arrogant about my own capabilities. Dr. Dean took the time to call me into his office, explain clearly that my glib superficiality merited even less than the C he had given me, and then offered advice about how to improve on the next paper. I was hurt and angry yet sensed that he cared. So I got to work. In that year I learnt a great deal about research that benefited me enormously in the next years of study. I never forgot his way of balancing his love for the literature and his respect for students. Years later when I began teaching English for St. Thomas More College, I often used my experience with Dr. Dean not only to try to motivate my students into turning a low grade into a learning opportunity, but also to reassure myself that the teaching of literature was a worthwhile endeavour.
My condolences to the family. I am sure he will be deeply missed.

I was saddened to learn of Chris's passing. We were colleagues in the English Department for many years, and had offices across the hall from each other for about 10 of them. Chris struck me as having the same kind of reserve as my English mother, but he was always kind to me, so I remember him warmly.
My condolences to you, Jeanette, and to your children. I know you will be missing him terribly. May you grieve freely and in time be comforted by your happy memories of him.
I have made a donation to Operation Smile in honour of Chris.

We were so sorry, Jeanette to hear of Chris's passing. He was such a lovely, gentle man. We appreciated the warm welcome to the neighborhood by both of you when we first moved to the area 23 years ago. His love of all things Lord of the Rings was remarkable, even naming the family cat Frodo. We still have and cherish the Lord of the Rings version of Monopoly that you gave to our children one year for Christmas. We miss you both as neighbours. Chris has earned a special place in Heaven.
