Lynn Snider

Obituary of Lynn Snider

Lynn “Red” Snider, 71, of Watrous, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 31, with his children by his side. Born February 13, 1949, in Swan River, Manitoba, he was the oldest son of Lorne(deceased) and Jean Snider. Dad started working right out of school together with his best friend Jim at 16 years old. They took a bus to Regina and hitch hiked to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, where he found work on a cattle and dairy farm. He did this for 3 years before making his way back to Winnipeg where he worked construction. In 1972 dad went to work in Thompson, Manitoba, at Inco Nickle Mine where he earned his nickname Red. His brother Kenny would also say this is when he owned “A wicked Trans Am and a yellow with black striped Super Bee, both were beautiful cars.” It was also here he met Barb and they stayed in Thompson until 1977. At this time, they moved their young family to Allan, Saskatchewan, where he worked for PCS Allan for 13 years. While there dad was a member of a multi championship mine rescue team competing at the Provincial and National level. At the same time dad was introduced to truck driving from his best friend Jim. It was when Jim let him drive that dad discovered an excitement for driving truck.  He then started a second job working for Al Bethel driving gravel truck and soon after decided to leave mining and started long haul trucking in 1990. This began a 30 year career driving for Yankee Transport, Winnipeg Motor Express and PFM. Eventually he purchased his own truck and trailer of which he was extremely proud. Dad logged approximately 5 million miles doing what he loved. We would also be remis if we did not mention Pat Mailoux. Dad would not have known how much Pat would contribute to his personal and professional success. We as a family are extremely thankful to Pat and his family for taking care of the 71 year old teenager. We can never fully express our gratitude for everything he has done for our family.

Dad was a social guy. There wasn’t a person in a truck stop that didn’t know dad, and he to remembered them by name. He also made sure to call home to his mom and his sister Heather. She would say, “He was a great brother and she will miss his phone calls and messages that always ended with I love you kid.” Dad finally retired November 2017 at 68 years old.

In December 2017 dad was diagnosis with stage 4 colorectal cancer with prognosis of 6 months. This started a journey of major surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. It was at this time dad open himself up to receive Christianity and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour. With reassurance and a positive attitude Dad would continually tell us, “I’m going to beat this.” Dad underwent a radical surgery that successfully removed the cancer. He would then spend 6 months recovering in the hospital before coming home to Watrous the summer of 2018. Now regaining his mobility and freedom he was able to drive to Manitoba to visit family, drive to Allan the visit friends and visit around the community. In the spring of 2019, he was given a confirmation of being cancer free and was told to enjoy living his life. This year was spent attending as many family functions as possible and enjoying spending time with his grandkids. Dad would continue this way until August of 2020 when again complications arose and regular hospital visits ensued. Over the last few weeks Dad again needed emergency surgery for complications with his bowel and fought very hard to recover, however on Saturday, October 31 Dad passed away peacefully.

Dad is survived by his 4 children, Melodie(Kirk)Rostie, Michelle and Keagan, Kathy Schwab, Brooklyn and Brittney, Ryan(Jamie) Snider, Reece, Bennett and Rylee, Breanne(Shane) Regush, Keadan, Deaken, Olivia, Beckham and Pryia. Also survived by his mother Jean Snider, brothers Cam, Kenny(Kelly ) his sister Heather Sharp, Jim(Judy) Sims and numerous nieces and nephews.
