For many years like 25 or so Darrell from Melfort, Brian Hemsworth from Lloydminister, Ralph Pedersen from Saskatoon and I (Dan Danielson) hunted together out at our farm. Usually that would be the only long weekend of the year we could all get together so much needed to be said and done with great fun and friendship. Fine memories.

To all the family- we are sending you strength, love, comfort and peace at this sad time.
I would like to share how inspiring Colleen and Darrell were as a couple. Living across the street from them in Saskatoon, I lucked out and enjoyed impromptu front yard visits and most recently a couple of walks around the block. They were determined to get fresh air, to experience life, and to make the best of whatever circumstances came their way. Conversations and smiles- what a team. Moving into the condo, making critical life choices at the right time, and living life to the fullest seemed to be their goal. So much to learn from them!
Jason and Steph, thank you for sharing stories about Darrell and for giving us the chance to meet your family. The Collins family has made a lasting impact and your Dad’s love and commitment to family (super proud Dad and Grandpa), education, politics, and the outdoors will always be remembered.
Keep the stories alive- they will create smiles, laughs and gratefulness for family and freedoms.

A Tribute to Darrell Collins a Life-Long Friend
By Dan Danielson
Sharon and I are very sorry to hear of the recent passing of our friend Darrell Collins. He passed after a long courageous forty year battle with recuring cancer. We offer our sincere condolences to his devoted loving wife Colleen and the families. Sharon and I want to especially thank you Colleen, for all you have done for our friend Darrell with your love and devotion over some tough times due to some unfortunate heath issues. We also know that you and him had some very happy times together with your families and many many friends.
We have lost a respected friend. The community has lost a fine leader. Education has lost a well prepared, patient, academic superstar. The world has lost a great humanitarian and articulate champion of social justice, with the courage of his convictions speaking loudly, living from the heart guided by uncommon wisdom.
For me personally, I have lost a very fine almost life-long friend since I was six years of age or so. We went to school together, even Sunday school, boy scouts, teachers college and practice teaching. We did hockey, curling, ball, goose hunting, camping, parties and even politics together. I recall working with him when his dad and mom (Albert & Dorothy) hired us both to work on their farm, which allowed him and me to attend university.
Both Darrell and I went off to university with a shallow bent toward the Conservative political persuasion, but independently with expanded study and wise interaction we both confidently shifted to the democratic socialist and co-operative views of Tommy Douglas and the New Democratic Party. Many times I would hear Darrell, even with a few tears, explain to one or all how thankful he was to Tommy Douglas, Woodrow Lloyd, Allen Blakeney and others for pioneering public medicare, which was so beneficial in his fight for better health. On their winter stays in Palm Springs he learned first hand because of some unfortunate trips to the hospital how superior our health care system really is. He had no time for anyone or any government suggesting otherwise. For Darrell he wanted us to know privatized health care only for those that could afford it was just “Wrong”.
Darrell did local government as a very well liked and productive councillor and mayor for the city of Melfort, while I did local government as trustee and board chair for the Saskatoon Public School Board. I supported him when he made a failed attempt at provincial politics and he supported me when I also made a failed attempt at provincial politics. We would agree “we only really fail if we don’t try”. He also encouraged my work as a local author and I admired his passion for airplanes when he obtained his pilots license.
For a number of years our contact with each other was less frequent as he and Colleen lived and worked at Melfort while Sharon and I lived and worked at the farm and in Saskatoon. Then we found ourselves together in retirement at READ 12 – Retired Educators Advancing Democracy with some close friends who all will sadly miss Darrell’s wisdom, experience, guidance and charismatic personality. His support and contribution to some serious Facebook posts and our many back and forth calls to discuss a particular issue or strategy, right up to his final days, will be a tremendous loss. Already there is a growing pain of sadness in my heart that reminds me of the enhanced life I have had knowing Darrell Collins, a fine man and a trusted friend, who I respected and admired. Rest in peace my friend.

This message is for Jason and Jacinda as we knew you when you were preschoolers when you lived on the corner of our street, Stovel East in Melfort, where we resided from 1975 to 1979. Jason, you used to climb our tree, and Jacinda, you would ride your tricycle over and then you would both stay for a visit. Your Dad was always so friendly, and although we have not seen him in years, we are sad for you that you lost your Dad and Grandpa to your grandkids at such a relatively young age. We know you and Colleen and your extended family will miss him.
Sincerely, Lyle and Joyce Hayes
