Ina passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on August 12, 2020. She is survived by her children: Hilton (Laurie), Susan (Al) Brucks, Hillman, Sammy (Nichole) and grandchildren: Jasmine, Connor, Ethan and Mia. Also by Jean Lee (sister) and family, numerous nieces, nephews and friends in Canada and the United States. Predeceased by Sam (husband), Ka Tong & You (Tse) Chow (parents), Edward Fuey Joe (brother) and Julie Wong (sister).
Ina was born February 10, 1938 in Kwongtung, China. Ina and Sam married on May 24, 1958 in Hong Kong. In 1958, they immigrated to Canada and settled in Maple Creek, SK where they started their first home. Ina was proud to receive her Canadian citizenship on September 18, 1964.
Ina and Sam's first son, Hilton, was born in Maple Creek in 1959. In 1960, they moved to Saskatoon where Susan was born. In 1962, the Jays moved to Davidson to own and operate The Owl Cafe. Ina loved to garden and grew Chinese vegetables to use in
the restaurant. Adding to their family, Hillman was born in 1964 and Sammy in 1971.
Ina and Sam started Jay Investments Ltd in 1977 in order to purchase their first real estate property in Saskatoon. In 1981, they sold The Owl Cafe in Davidson and moved the family to Saskatoon as their interest in real estate grew. Along with owning real estate property, Ina enjoyed working in the catering business for Beaver Foods and the Bessborough. Ina retired February 7, 2003, with a lavish retirement party hosted by the Bessborough Hotel. After retirement, Ina continued helping friends with their private home parties and restaurant businesses, enjoying the company of those she worked with.
Ina's greatest joy was her children and grandchildren. Ina loved being a grandma and being called "Yin Yin". Despite limited schooling, Ina always encouraged her children to get an education and to have a "good life". Mom worked hard her entire life, never complaining, and putting everyone’s needs before her own. She was very proud and delighted in each of our successes.
We will miss our Mom, Grandma, "Yin Yin" very much. We will miss her unconditional love, guidance, stories, enjoying dim sum and family celebrations together, generosity, kind heart, and her beautiful smile. Family always came first. Most importantly, we will miss the love she shared with us.
Due to the restrictions of Covid-19, there will be a private family graveside service that can be viewed by clicking on the livestream link at the to of this page on Tuesday August 25 at 11 a.m.
