Nancy, Kathy, Gerry and Families,
Thoughts of people in our lives are too fleeting and few.
Although I did not spend a great deal of time with Uncle Hughie as some of our other family members had, his passing is no less impactual on me.
Those times when we visited in Saskatoon set the fond memories I have of Uncle Hughie and Aunty Joyce for a lifetime. They are of laughter, love and fun! Uncle Hughie loved children and I already knew that at the young age of seven. He always took time to ask me to sit beside him and have a conversation. He asked the same questions each time and I always took the bait: "How is school?" "Are you a good student?" and "How many boyfriends do you have?" - then he would grin really big and it was then that I knew he got me again! I know where Gerry gets his wicked sense of humour from and where all three of Uncle and Aunty's children get their kindness and gentleness from. You do your parents proud!
During today's service, I learned many new things about Uncle Hughie, that he could cook, learned to play guitar and that he completed his high school diploma! As a teacher and his niece, I am so proud of him and wished I could have told him so. The passing of time and miles makes missing these important moments difficult.
As I carry on with my life, I am a better person for having been a small part of Uncle Hugh and Aunty Joyce's lives.
Rest in power Uncle Hugh. How could we ever forget you?
In peace,
Jill (Owen) Lewis
