I often tell people about the amazing women of my hometown, with big personalities and even bigger hearts. How they could somehow wrangle a town to perform amazing feats and accomplish almost impossible logistics that any high paid CEO would be proud of. Helen Sutherland was this woman.
From the library to the museum to the community celebrations, Helen made all our lives better. Her leadership in the community and commitment to her remarkable and beautiful family is stuff of legend. I extend this as well to Don whom we all loved dearly and who will remain in our hearts forever.
Helen had the most contagious laugh and she lit up every room she entered with her positive energy. As our families were extremely close, I have admired Helen my entire life. During these uncertain times with so much wrong in the world, it centers me knowing there have been deeply beautiful people like Helen who have made things better. I’m not alone in my adoration. I heard it every time I went back home. So many people would speak about Helen with reverence, love and admiration. I’ve been told how she would ‘suggest’ things happen, or tease those who might ‘want’ to do a task. Of course everyone complied. We all love you, Helen, in all your force-of-nature magnificence.
These are precarious times, yet you will always shine as a true bright light in the lives of so many. Our beautiful Helen. All my love, Kathryn Saunders

Our condolences to the Sutherland family. Helen was a wonderful person, one of my much-loved cousins. For the last few years, we always shared a good visit by phone in the days following Christmas. I was lucky enough to have two lively phone visits with her in the last few weeks, and know that she was feeling surrounded by the love of her family and friends. She was an amazing person, as her obituary shows. We will miss her.

Our sincere condolences to the Sutherland family for the loss of your beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her continuous contributions and active involvement in the Borden community will be long remembered. Mrs. Sutherland provided me (and most of the local neighbor kids) with my first summer job picking berries, and she always had a wonderful recommendation for a 'good read' whenever we would stop by the library.
Fritz and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be the new occupants of her beautiful little home in Borden. We are blessed with the ongoing enjoyment of her gardening talents. Wishing you all comfort as you mourn your loss, and also joy as you recall many wonderful years and memories of her life.

Although I only knew Helen during the time she lived at Luther Heights she became quite dear to me. We worked together to tidy up the library and enjoyed many laughs as we weeded the collection. Her idea, which made sense to me given the context of a seniors' library, was to remove all books which were too heavy to lift or which had print that was too small. But Helen, that's a well reviewed book, i would say. Who's going to read it, she would ask, and I, a professionally trained librarian, was stumped. Who would, indeed? Added to this wonderful experience of life in a seniors' independent living complex with Helen was our involvement in the Writer's Group and our conversations over dinner. Her writing was honest, vivid and enriching and she loved to talk. I miss her, and send my deepest sympathy to her beloved family. .Sincerely, Anne Smart

We are so very sorry for the loss of such a great lady and such a special mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Both Lee and I have great memories. Lee especially remembers getting to know her when she was involved with initially starting the library in Borden. I have so very many memories, especially growing up in the same area and with me spending so much time with Dawn. She helped me with many 4-H projects and was just always so kind and generous. When we moved back to Borden, we got to know her again and she was simply always volunteering for something and, of course, asking for volunteers. I had the pleasure of working with her on some committees. She was one of the most dedicated volunteers and genuinely great people I had the privilege to know. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Diane and Lee
