Obituary of Nan Casey

Nan Casey

1923 - 2020

With her memory forever in our hearts, the passing of our mom, grandma and great grandma occurred on February 7, 2020 at the age of 96. Nan is survived by her children Robin (Robin), Dean (Jacquie), Frances (Brian), Mark (Jacky), Brian (Doris), daughter-in-law Linda, her 13 grandchildren, Alan, Brent, Sean, Ian, Kurtis, Kelly, Derek, Shannon, Erin, Brett, Ryan, Kyle and Kevin, their spouses and her 19 great grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her beloved nieces, nephews and cousins in Holland, nephew Mac (Iva) McDonald and many other Casey family relatives. Nan was born Jannigje Cornelia Jansen in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on April 29th, 1923. She grew up in the city of Zeist and worked as a telephone operator during the war. After the Dutch Liberation and on a blind date, Nan met a Canadian soldier named Frank Casey and they married on December 20, 1945. Nan came to Canada as a War Bride on the ship Aquitania, disembarking on Pier 21, then riding the train all the way from Halifax to Penticton to meet Frank. They moved to Saskatoon in 1952 where they raised their 6 children. Nan worked many years as a SaskTel operator and was a long-time member of the Saskatchewan War Bride Association. She really enjoyed attending their many reunions over the years. Nan loved to knit, read, go camping and to travel, going on many adventures and returning home to Holland numerous times. In true Dutch style, she enjoyed her many birthday parties that were held for her. She loved to swim and was a member of the YMCA for over 40 years. There wasn’t a lake or pool around that Nan hadn’t gone in for a ``little swim`` as she used to say. She loved her family and she loved her freedom, making sure we always knew how important they both were. Nan is predeceased by her husband Frank, sons Henry and Ron, daughter-in-law Rita, her parents, her sister Tini, and her niece Marianne. “To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die.”

Due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions on the size of gatherings, we sadly will once again be cancelling Nan’s memorial reception that was to take place on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at the Edward’s Family Centre. A private family interment will take place instead. The Casey family would like to thank everyone for being a part of our mom’s life and for your kind words, cards and condolences. We would also like to extend our thanks to the staff at Stensrud Lodge for her excellent care.
