Obituary of Vera May Fitzsimmons
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Vera May Fitzsimmons, at the Sunnyside Advent Home, Friday, January 17, 2020, in her 94th year, after a short illness. Vera was born at Chalk Cottage, Stuart Green, Holyport, near Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, the youngest child of William and Bea Williams on November 4, 1925. She had a happy childhood and after attending school at Holyport Vera was employed at a shoe factory until World War II broke out. During the War she met an Army buddy of her brother Charles, her future husband, William Sinclair Fitzsimmons. They were married in Holyport in 1944.Vera, one of the many English War Brides, emigrated to Canada entering through Pier 21, Halifax with her childhood friend, Molly Becker. Together they travelled by train to Saskatoon, where she was united with “Bill” after his honourable discharge from the Canadian Army in 1945. In 1946, Bill joined the Canada Pacific Railroad and they settled in Sutherland, where son William was born in 1950. In November, 1958, the family made their first journey back to England for an extended three month visit with family, via Halifax to Liverpool, with return trips back every second year. Vera enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers, her life as a mother and later on, as grandmother. Her family remembers the summer car trips travelling with them on annual trips to Penticton, British Columbia. She continued to be an active member of the English War Brides, in Saskatoon for many years. In her later years Vera was admitted into the Sunnyside Advent Nursing Home, Saskatoon. She was predeceased by her husband, William Sinclair Fitzsimmons, and her two brothers John and Charles Williams. Vera is survived by her only son William Charles, three grand children, Cara Sigstad(Glen), Shannon and Sean and three great grandchildren, Mason, Olivia and Hudson. Funeral Services will take place on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church (135 - 109th Street Saskatoon, SK).
