Obituary of Elizabeth Thiessen

It is with sadness the family announces that Elizabeth Thiessen of Saskatoon passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at the age of 100 years.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her son Jerald on February 23, 2019 and her husband John in 1998. She is survived by her loving family, children Margaret (Ron) Trost, Elizabeth (Tom) Brown, Garry (Doreen) Thiessen, Dannie (Tena) Thiessen, Roselyn (Randy) Colwell, Gloria (James) Mitchell and daughter-in-law Shelley Kirychuk. Elizabeth is cherished by her 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by her sisters and brother, Mary Doerksen, aged 99, Susan Muller, Helen Epp, Margie Reimer, Kathy (Clarence) Sawatzky and Jack Heinrichs.

The Funeral Service will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Ave. N., Saskatoon) on Friday, August 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Len Bachiu.

Elizabeth had a vibrant inner strength and resilience that endured for her lifetime, even into her last days of being 100 years old.   Her deep ability to love and her regard for family, radiated as they entered the room.  This deep love, joined with her strong faith in God, fueled her life with the attitude of abundance and fullness which benefitted all the generations that came in contact with her. Elizabeth was a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, sister and community member.  She had strong sense of character, quick wit and personal integrity.  Her deep convictions of fairness and objectivity made her a sought- after confidante.  She encouraged the higher road, to use honesty, generosity with the added bonus of freshly baked apple pie as the vehicles of persuasion.  Her husband John could say with pride in the community curling rink, “come over for coffee, Elizabeth always has something freshly baked!” Elizabeth was trustworthy and reliable, a constant source of strength and support to her family through the fun summer boating season and the more serious time of harvest.  The early hardships of her life, an immigration with her family at the age of eight to a new country and language and then the loss of a mother at a tender age, deepened her faith and ability to be self-reliant, a leader, helpmate and companion to her younger siblings and then to her own family of seven. Elizabeth was an encourager.  She gave each of her children the grounding, support and love they needed to forge their own solid places and families in the world.  She enjoyed the diversity, the creativity and all the activity that came with an expanding family.  She appreciated their stories and adventures as children and grandchildren stepped forth.  Her own ability to grow and love wider and deeper continued. When Elizabeth lead a small group of community ladies in reaching out with quilts and clothing to third world countries, the passage of scripture she read and prayers she gave, focused on Ephesian 3:14-21.  Her strongest prayer was for the heart of every person of her family. Elizabeth, you are the finest of the Finest!
