Obituary of Martha Hutchison Nicholson
"Marty" passed away on the morning of February 24, 2019 in Saskatoon, SK. Marty was born on June 10, 1919 in Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Scotland. She was predeceased by her parents Adam Robertson Marshall and Martha Main Huthison, infant son William John, brother James (Jim) and sisters Mathilda (Tilly) and Margaret (Meg), brothers-in-law Charlie Blake and Wilf Caisley and sister-in-law Bert Marshall. In 1923 Marty, her mother and brothers and sisters sailed across the Atlantic landing at Quebec City where they boarded a train and came across the country to settle in Saskatoon where their father had found work. She attended King George School and Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon and in 1942 married Harold Nicholson. While raising a family Marty was active in the Nutana Lioness Club, and was an active bridge player. Life was always active, moving to Toronto in 1971 and back west to Calgary in 1974. After raising her family Mom returned to work in 1974 with Birks Jewelers until 1984 when Harold and Marty retired to Victoria and then to Westbank in 1993. Marty enjoyed golf, playing bridge, travel and most of all her three sons, Robert (Dianne), David (Marie) and Gordon (Dene). She adored her grandchildren, Christopher, Braeden and Caetlen and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the wonderful caring and supportive staff at Home Instead Senior Care and Sunnyside Care Home; they were like family to Marty and elevated her quality of life in her final years. A Celebration of Marty's Life and reception will take place at the Edwards Family Centre on Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 p.m. (parking at Saskatoon Funeral Home 4th Ave. & 25th St.) A family Graveside Committal will take place earlier at the family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
