Obituary of Dale Maxwell Beavis

The death of Dale Beavis age 74 years of Saskatoon occurred on Feb 11, 2019 in Palm Springs, CA of sudden heart failure. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Ave N (courtesy parking south of the Chapel). A reception for family and friends will be held at W.A. Edwards Centre immediately following the service. Dale is survived by his wife Janis and dog Little, sons Jason (Barb) and Daniel (Clare), granddaughters Jane, Beth, Olivia and grandson Ford, brother Barrie (Marion), sister Beverley, nieces and nephews Laurie (Glenn), Chris (Lisa), Cole (Lauren), Darcie (Greg) and Tracie (Michael) and their families as well.  Dale was predeceased by his parents Ford and Hazel Beavis and his older brother Bob. Dale was born in Saskatoon . He attended school  at Victoria School, Brunskill School and Nutana Collegiate. Starting in the hotel business at a young age, Dale would split his time between working on the family farm and the Baldwin Hotel. Like his parents and siblings, he branched into commercial and residential real estate but that didn’t stop him from always having a sport or hobby to keep him busy.  Dale struggled with ulcerative colitis as a young man and had surgery to help control the disease in the 1970's, he never let that procedure slow or keep him down his entire life, he just overcame it like he did with any of life's challenges.   Highlights of his business career include opening Smugglers restaurant with his family, the revitalization of the Drinkle #3 into Regent Plaza, repurposing the Albany Hotel, developing Essex Plaza and reclaiming Queen Street Plaza in the heart of downtown Saskatoon.  He was a founding member of the Downtown Partnership (DTNYXE), he served as the President of the Saskatchewan Hotel’s Association, was a long term board member of the University Hospital Foundation, and was involved in the construction of Sherbrooke nursing home.  Dale was proud of his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous having spent over 30 years as a member.  Dale was a champion trap shooter as a young man, competing and placing in world class competitions, he was a skydiver and pilot in the 60s and took up golf once he started his family.  He golfed nearly every day, achieving a hole in one and a low handicap until his sons got old enough to skydive with him and he joined them and led his son Jason to national recognition in the sport. He taught his sons about business his entire life and is extremely proud of their restaurant, O’Shea’s Irish Pub.  Along with his brothers, he continued on with the Beavis Breakfast tradition started by his father Ford. For the past 73 years early on a Saturday morning in the harvest season,  hundreds of people have descended on the beautiful Red Deer Lake Valley near the Beavis farm for a special celebration of friendship and appreciation of nature. Thousands have enjoyed what has been known over the years as the "Harvest Breakfast", the "Hunting Breakfast" and the "Ford Beavis Breakfast." In later life, Dale has been in love with the city of Palm Springs and has been avoiding Saskatchewan winters by spending his time down there.  Since becoming a grandfather Dale’s focus moved away from business to his grandchildren.  He was happiest when his family visited him in Palm Springs and he watched the kids playing in the pool while his dog sat on his lap. In lieu of flowers, please spend time with your family doing something that you love, or donate to the SPCA or Small Dog Rescue. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
