Obituary of Margaret "Peggy" Kathleen Martin

Peggy Martin passed away on February 9, 2019 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 75. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Tim Martin and daughters Stacey Martin of Regina and Deane Martin-Gray (Kent Gray) of Saskatoon, and grandchildren Grace and Jonathan Podbielski, and Jack and Sara Gray. She will also be fondly remembered by many good friends and former colleagues. She was predeceased by her parents Gladys Wigmore in 1987 and Rork Wigmore in 2003. Peggy was born in Yorkton in 1943, moved to Leader in 1949, and Assiniboia in 1956 where she graduated from high school. She attended the University of Saskatchewan and attained her teaching certificate from the College of Education in 1963. It was during this time that she met Tim, a Constable in the RCMP, stationed in Willow Bunch. They married in 1963 and moved to Swift Current where she began her teaching career, teaching elementary school. After their children Stacey and Deane were born, she continued to substitute teach in the many communities in which they lived in Saskatchewan. She continued her university education through correspondence, and after the family moved to Saskatoon in 1988, she studied English Literature at the University of Saskatchewan and earned an Honours BA in 1992, an MA in 1995 and a PhD in 2001. She taught as a sessional lecturer in the U of S English Department until 2011. To the end of her life, she read widely and avidly, studied literature, and enjoyed being in book clubs with her friends. She loved her home, her family and grandchildren, and enhanced the lives of family and friends. The family wish to express their appreciation to the doctors and nursing staff at the RUH and Saskatoon City Hospital during the past year. A Funeral Service in celebration of Peggy Martin’s life will be held at Knox United Church, 838 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon, on Tuesday, February 26th, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Internment at RCMP Cemetery in Regina will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society – Saskatchewan Division. It is requested floral donations be sent to the funeral home.
