Martha Lydia (Dirks) Lepp was born Feb.10, 1919 to Jacob and Susanna (Luetke) Dirks, in their farmhouse west of Waldheim, where she spent her childhood and young adulthood.
Mom writes, "I was in my early teens when Herb Peeler and Ed Erickson came to conduct revival meetings in our church. I responded during an altar call and found assurance of salvation through John 1:12. That same year I was baptized and became a member of Salem KMB church." Mom's spiritual life was always very important to her and she was very disciplined in her commitment throughout her life.
Mom would have loved to be a nurse, but educational opportunities were limited. So after an extra year at home her parents sacrificed to enable her to attend Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn. Through her time there, she met Ernest Lepp, who had just bought a farm, and needed a wife. After a brief courtship Mom and Dad were married Sept. 29, 1940. They were a great farming couple, and survived the many ups and downs of that way of life. Their three daughters were born during these years.
It was a huge event when in 1983 Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved to Saskatoon to begin retirement. They loved their John Hair Cres. House, and later the condo at Circle Drive Place.
Music played a huge part in their lives. Mom loved her autoharp, and with Dad's keyboard and sax, and Uncle Menno's violin, they gave countless programs to seniors in many places.
Mom continued to enjoy reading, gardening, hosting, and for awhile her interest in politics was quite remarkable. I think she even dragged Dad along on occasion to deliver flyers for Preston Manning and the Reform party.
After Dad died in 2014, Mom soon moved to the Bentley where she really enjoyed her last years. But her health slowly declined and finally after 10 days in hospital palliative care, she finally went to heaven Sat. Jan. 19, 2019.
Martha was predeceased by her husband Ernest, her parents, and 5 siblings.
She is survived by her 3 daughters: Fran and Dave Harms of Steinbach MB, Sharon and Rod Hunt of Tisdale SK, Lucy and Wayne Bridges of Saskatoon, and their families. She is also survived by two siblings, Art Dirks of Abbotsford and Vi Thomson of Surrey BC.
Aunt Vi requested that the following poem be read at Mom' s memorial:
The times comes when those
whom we have loved
the longest and the best
will travel far ahead
into a place of joy and rest.
And we must walk a lonely path
through shadows for awhile
without a certain kindred voice
a dear, familiar smile...
yet each day brings us nearer
to horizons yet unknown
and even when the way is dark,
we never walk alone,
for memories travel with us
toward the happy destination
where we will join our loved ones
in eternal celebration.
