There are no words that adequately express what Barry meant to so many people in so many situations, familial, social, and academic. He was a friend, a colleague, a mentor, an off-campus road warrior, a (world) traveler, an animal lover, a car guy, a book lover, and a foodie. He was a most gentle man, kind and thoughtful. And a lot of fun! We are so sorry for your loss. We wish you peace as you deal with the loss of Barry.
I will miss waving at him on Thursday mornings as we both drove to PA to teach early morning classes. I had to pass him every week as I was always late and he was always early. Rest in peace Barry. You will be missed.

Saddened to hear the news of Barry's passing. He had a tremendous impact on me while attending University 25 years ago. I never forgot the kind, gentle and knowledgeable person he was. He always had time to help his students and his classes helped make me a better teacher.

Barry’s class was one I looked forwards to each week. His passion for teaching inspired me to reach beyond my goals to achieve more. I looked forwards to every Thursday morning when he would come in to teach ... his smiling face and twinkling eyes were the highlight of my week even after I was done my schooling.
Barry will be greatly missed! My deepest condolences to Barry’s wife and family.

Barry was inspirational educator. He opened many students eyes to literary elements around us. I took his ENG film class while I was at SUNTEP, and gained a deeper appreciation of reading the world around us.

Barry's death has stunned us. He was a man who loved life, whose wide-ranging education and life experience made him uniquely prepared to embrace whatever came his way. I was privileged to have taught Barry, and taught with him, too. We shared an enthusiasm for literature, and Irish literature particularly. I valued his opinions and enjoyed time spent teaching and attending conferences with him. Barry was kind, generous, and modest, exuding an air of calm thoughtfulness. Those of us who knew him, even those who were more like colleagues than friends, had a deep respect for Barry. He will be sorely missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Barry will be missed. I loved his class, he had so much passion for literature. This man helped me to become confident in my writing skills. He simplified it for me and taught me to love what I wrote. The way I write. I cannot thank him enough. He is my favorite English Prof ❤️

So sorry to hear of Barry's passing. My memories are of our dinner group of many years ago (Errol/Lorraine, Bill/Marilyn, Gary/I). Great food, wine and conversation. I especially remember Barry and Errol amazing the rest of us with all their detailed information of music and bands, etc. Such fun.

Zandra and I are very sorry to learn of the sudden passing of Barry on Christmas Day. He was a dear friend to me, kind, considerate, and generous. We first met when I did a sabbatical at St Andrew's College, and he was was an "Enquirer" for the United Church Ministry. When I later returned to Canada he welcomed me without reservation and continued to show me gracious hospitality; we encouraged each other in our academic studies, he in English Literature and I in Philosophy. Barry gave up banking for teaching, which for him was a sacred vocation demanding no less dedication than the ministry. He was an excellent teacher and administrator. He never lost his love of the farm and his concern for his parents. Although in recent times we have not seen each other as often as we would like, we did have coffee in the spring and promised to meet more often. Farewell my friend. May the Lord bless you and keep you, and give you, Sherry, and your loved ones, comfort and peace.

Two passings, too early and far too close together.

We always looked up to our cousin Barry, both figuratively and literally. Whenever we visited the farm or the Popowich ‘s visited us in Minnedosa we always had a good time. My mom was always close to her brother, Walter. Barry even taught us how to play Monopoly!
I am very sorry not to be able to take Barry for a ride in Grandma’s 1953 Chevy that is nearly roadworthy. I asked if he wanted it but he said it brought back too many memories and turned me down. I will think of him each time I start it up.
Barry, say hi to your folks and our grandparents for me. I miss you all.
