Rowena was born at Napanee, Ontario. At age 17, she left home to study at the University of Toronto, where she obtained a B.A. and an M.S.W. During her young adulthood, she was employed at the Y.W.C.A. in Weston, and taught at Ontario Ladies College. In 1952, she married Robert McLellan, and together they started a life of service to the United Church in Saskatchewan, first in Hudson Bay, followed by Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon. One highlight of her life of service was receiving the Citizen of the Year Award in Prince Albert in 1962, for her work in the establishment of the Friendship Centre. Other volunteer work included Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, Canadian Girls in Training and countless Committees of her Church.
Rowena married Bert Mather in 2005. Their marriage was a blessing to both of them. Rowenas children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are grateful for her constant love and support.
The family appreciates the outstanding care Rowena received from the staff at Amy McClure House, especially Michelle, Tiffiny, Vanita and Lois. During her final weeks, niece Ann Forcellini and friend Margaret Anderson were of great assistance and comfort.
Friends wishing to remember Rowenas life may contribute to the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada, Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services or a charity of their choice. Funeral arrangements by Saskatoon Funeral Home.
