Obituary of Maggie Celia Baldwin

Maggie Celia “Sis” Baldwin (Fraser)

January 20, 1927 - November 19, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Maggie Baldwin on November 19th, 2018 at the age of 91 years. Mom was born on a farm near Peterson, Saskatchewan and spent her early years in Saskatoon returning to the farm for the summer months.  She attended school in Saskatoon at St Joseph’s, the Convent of Sion and Tech.  As a child Mom loved skating and playing hockey.  During the spring and summer Mom played the position of back-catcher for the neighbourhood baseball team.  She worked in several cafes on 2nd Avenue in Saskatoon and in the spring of 1946, returning WWII veteran George Baldwin started frequenting one of those cafes and noticed the pretty young waitress.  Within a few weeks the two were dating and in September of that year married.  So began the adventure.  Their eldest daughter Dawn was born July 1947 and soon after the young couple moved to Detroit Michigan returning to Saskatoon in the mid 1950’s.  They expanded their family welcoming two more daughters Nancy and Jackie and settled in Montgomery Place.  Besides raising her girls, Mom worked part time at Eaton’s and enjoyed gardening, sewing, cross-stitch, knitting and 10 pin bowling. On most Saturday nights, Mom and Dad, along with their good friends Marg and Lloyd Reid, attended functions and socialized at the HMCS Unicorn Chief’s and PO’s Mess.  They loved to dance.  After Dad’s retirement their years were filled with travel, spending their winters with Grace and Roy Cranston and the Reid’s in Mesa Arizona and their summers at their cabins at Pike Lake.  After Dad passed in 1991 Mom settled into apartment life in Saskatoon, continuing with her many hobbies especially enjoying puzzles, a good game of cards and swimming at the YWCA.  Mom joined the Legion and was often working bingos, helping to deliver meals on wheels and flipping hamburgers with her good friends Marg Lambert and Elwood Matheson.  She continued to enjoy traveling to visit family in England, Scotland and the West Coast for many years.  In spite of the setbacks from Mom’s failing health, she continued to love life and was thrilled to go out for a drive to the local ice-cream shop, go shopping and attend family gatherings. The family thanks the Health Care Teams at Villa Royale Extended Care and Oliver Lodge LTC for the loving care they provided to Mom. A special thank you to Dr. AJ Harrington for the exceptional care and attentiveness he provided to Mom over many years. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Tom Fraser and Mary Fraser, step-mother Liz Fraser, husband George Baldwin, daughter Dawn Rutherford and son-in-law Gordon Rutherford, father-in-law Percy Baldwin, mother-in-law Alison Baldwin and George’s mother Mary Foley.  She was predeceased by all of her Fraser siblings; sisters – Doll, Gladys, Jean, Nan and Pat; brothers – Bob, Don, Sandy and Tom.  Survived by daughters Nancy Baldwin Lemoine (Rene) and Jackie Baron (Bryan).  Grandchildren (all her Charlie and Sams), Jody Rutherford-Cey (Mark), Scott Rutherford (Kerrie), Joseph Baldwin, Jennifer Taylor (Tabb), Bryan Baron (April), Bradley Baron (Lindsay McLellan), Brett Baron (Natalie), Lindsay Nelson (Josh). Great grandchildren (more Charlie and Sams); Jonah, Lauren, Alison, Grace, Gabriella, Jakob, Joshua, Jonathon, Brody, Madison & Ruby.  Also survived by brother-in-law Don Baldwin and his wife Eunice, sister-in-law Roberta Simpson and numerous nieces and nephews.  You may have known Mom as Mrs. Baldwin, Maggie or Margaret or Celia or Celi or Aunt, however, to those who knew her well she was Sis.  We will remember our Mom and GG with the fondest of memories filled with smiles and laughter.  She will always be in our hearts, never forgotten and always loved.  Internment and a gathering for Mom will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
