Passed away suddenly from a heart attack last week in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with son Adam by his side. Hans was born in Karlshamn, Sweden in 1950 to parents Gosta and Asta (Nilsson) Petersson. Hans was married to Susan Blacklin from 1983 to 2011, and is survived by his siblings Claes and Camilla and by his 4 children: Adam, Elsa, Mark, and Sven. Hans met his dear Sha (McKellop) Peterson in 2011 and they enjoyed married life in Stanley Mission and Jamaica. Dr. Hans, as he was affectionately known, had one dream, and that was to provide water treatment solutions to even the smallest community with the poorest quality raw water source. He founded WateResearch Corp where he pioneered the development of the Integrated Biological Water Treatment system which made boil water advisories a thing of the past for many First Nations communities. Showing that it was possible was not enough though. He founded the Safe Drinking Water Foundation in 1998 to educate students throughout Canada, and lobby municipal, provincial, and the Federal Government to improve regulations to ensure it became a reality. In 2013 he founded Filter Core where he continued to advise on water issues. SDWF’s educational mission has flourished, with approximately half a million students educated since 2001 through their Operation Water Drop programme.
A Service will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home at 2:00pm, Thursday, November 1, 2018 with Sue Panattoni as celebrant, where everyone whose life has been impacted by Hans is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, we would ask that you consider a donation to SDWF and the Safe Drinking Water Team (go to safewater.org and click “donate”).
