Obituary of Eva Hazelwanter

Gone Home. With heavy hearts, we say good-bye to our Mom and Grammy, Eva Hazelwanter (nee Postnikoff). Mom passed peacefully on Friday at City hospital, at the age of 86 and with family members beside her.
Mom was born on a farm on top of the hill of the Petrofka bridge and spent her childhood roaming the hills and valleys with her brother and sister. Many of her special memories involved growing up on the farm and the freedom (and mischief) that life on the farm allowed.
At the age of 16 she attended Teachers College in Saskatoon.  At the age of 18 she and her family moved into Saskatoon. Her first teaching experience began at age 18 at the Finlayson School near Langham. She later began teaching in a one room school house in Moon Lake and talked (not very wistfully) about the cold winter weekends traveling back and forth from Saskatoon back to the cold, dark school house at Moon Lake.   
In 1952 she married Edwin and soon after they began their family and raised three children together. Mom and Dad always put their kids first and made sure we had everything we needed. Mom continued teaching kindergarten in Saskatoon while raising her family, but always remained focussed on raising her children. Summers included drive-ins, taking drives in the country and holidays at the lake or in the mountains.
When the grandchildren came, Mom embraced that time in her life. With the responsibilities of raising children over, she allowed herself to just enjoy her grand children and have fun.  She baked, she played, she babysat and she always looked forward to the grandkids running in and out of the house. When the house was full and busy, she was at her happiest.  During family get-togethers, Mom always cooked an enormous amount of incredible food and you could expect her to say “eat, eat eat” at least 2-3 times over the course of the visit. Borsch & home-made bread, cabbage rolls, perogies, potato soup, cinnamon buns, puffed wheat cake – you wanted them, she made them. She also passed on her culinary skills and wonderful recipes to all of us and created a cookbook (Kasha  Malasha) for her family, in order to continue the legacy of food made with love. She also gave us the gift of unconditional love and the importance of family. As one of her granddaughters expressed, “She taught me so much about love and life and family and myself. She blessed us all with so much love.  She was so beautiful and Intelligent, smart and funny and she loved us all so much.” She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother and sister and others who knew and loved her.
A very special thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses on the third floor at City Hospital, and all others who provided her with excellent care and much kindness during her final days. She referred to many of them as her angels.  Mom requested to be cremated and for family to have a private memorial service at a later date.
