Obituary of Melvin Lorne Byblow

July 18, 1937 - May 31, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin (Mel) Byblow. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lorraine and his children Melody and Clint (Sherry), grandsons Dakota, Dylan and Dawson; brother-in-law Dale Peppler (Charlene), and sister-in-law Carole Peppler, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents George and Enid Byblow, brother-in-law Glenn Peppler, and nephew Greg Peppler.

Mel was born and raised in Yorkton. He enjoyed Boyscouts, got his small aircraft pilot’s license as a teen, and started his military service with the Army Cadets. He married Lorraine Peppler on June 12, 1959, adopted their children a few years later and moved to Winnipeg in 1969. Mel worked in parts departments for vehicle dealers and was in the Armed Forces Reserves 402 Squadron for 15 years. They moved to Saskatoon in 1984 for his work with Pritchard Engineering and he became a leader with the Air Cadet Squadron. In the late 1980s, he managed a billiards business for a couple of years before starting at Saskatoon Processing as Purchasing Agent for 10 years, retiring at age 63. Not ready for full retirement, he worked part-time at Saskatoon and Hillcrest funeral homes for a few years.

Mel was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Lorraine, and enjoyed square dancing and camping until his Parkinson’s Disease became too challenging. He loved model railroading, stamp collecting and his workshop. He was involved with the Saskatoon Parkinson’s Support Group, UCT, and the Prairieland Exhibition Parade Committee. Mel is fondly remembered by his family and friends for his great sense of humour and community volunteering.

Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 11, 1pm at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1405 – 31st Street West, Saskatoon, SK. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Parkinson’s Canada.
