Obituary of Betty Cheveldayoff

Betty Cheveldayoff
August 2, 1933 - March 15, 2018

It is with profound sadness the family of Betty Cheveldayoff announce her passing on March 15, 2018. Betty was born in the Langham district of Saskatchewan to parents Mike G. and Helen D. Popoff. She grew up in the village of Ceepee where her father was a grain buyer for the National Grain Company. At the age of 15 Betty moved to Blaine Lake when her father was transferred there. Upon finishing high school, she attended a secretarial program in Marcelin along with her sister Helen, and subsequently took a secretarial job in Saskatoon. On March 21, 1954 at the age of 20, Betty married Alfred Cheveldayoff of Blaine Lake. They began their 54 year marriage on a farm nine miles east of Blaine Lake which they farmed together. After starting a family, she returned to her professional career and began working as a secretary in the Blaine Lake School Division office for many years until taking an early retirement in 1990. She also cherished her role as a Grandmother to four grandchildren.

Betty was always known for her generous hospitality and kindness. If you were a guest in her home you would never leave hungry! She was a “people person” and loved to visit with young and old. Betty was also very proud of her Doukhobor heritage. She participated in various choirs, and was an active member of both the Blaine Lake and Saskatoon Doukhobor societies as well as the Blaine Lake Doukhobor Ladies’ Club. She took great joy in teaching the younger generations of her family how to prepare traditional Doukhobor foods. Betty and Alfred also enjoyed travelling the world, and their vacations took them across North and South America, the Caribbean, Australia, Asia, and Europe. After semi-retiring from farming in 1996, Betty and Alfred built a home in Saskatoon and began enjoying city life. After Alfred passed away in 2008, Betty continued to live in their home in Saskatoon until suffering a severe stroke in 2011. She was unable to move back to her home after her recovery and began residence at the Parkridge long-term care facility in Saskatoon. Our family would like to express our gratitude to the health care providers who were part of Betty’s daily life at Parkridge these past seven years.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at the chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon) followed by a lunch. A private family interment will take place later that afternoon at Pazeraevka Cemetery near Blaine Lake. Betty is survived by daughter Virginia Androsoff of Saskatoon and son Russell (wife Laurie) Cheveldayoff of Blaine Lake, as well as her four grandchildren: Ryan Androsoff (partner Rita Van Jurec) of Ottawa, ON; Darren Androsoff of Prince Albert; Ashley Cheveldayoff (husband Allen Bekolay) of Saskatoon; Amanda Cheveldayoff (partner Jesse Bernier) of Campbell River, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation (#26-1738 Quebec Ave., Saskatoon, SK, S7K 1V9) or to the Saskatoon Doukhobor Society Scholarship Fund (525 Ave. I South, Saskatoon, SK, S7M 1Y6).
