Obituary of Lorin Byrnes
The family of J. Lorin Byrnes is sad to announce his death at RUH in Saskatoon on March 1, 2018. Born on April 6, 1927 to John and Edna Byrnes, Lorin grew up on the family farm in southern Saskatchewan, first near Hazenmore, then Parkman, followed by a family move to Transcona MB, where he finished high school. After a move to Burnaby, Lorin attended UBC. He started to work for H.R. MacMillan Exports in 1947 in Vancouver where he met and courted Shirley Hunt. They were married in Vancouver on July 8, 1950 and moves to Winnipeg and Saskatoon followed. During these years, Lorin and Shirley welcomed 4 daughters. Lorin enjoyed a variety of activities before and after his retirement in 1986. Square dancing with Shirley, curling, aquafit, coaching hockey, cross country skiing, camping at the Waskesiu Narrows, fishing and computers were just some of his interests. Lorin felt strongly about giving back to the community, so he joined the Lions Club. One of his favourite Lions’ activities was being Santa Claus and he always enjoyed volunteering his time for this. Family was of paramount importance to Lorin. He was never happier than when spending time with Shirley, his daughters and their families. Lorin set an example for his family of fairness, generosity, the importance of education and an appreciation for family history. Predeceased by his parents, and his siblings Willa McKillop and Murray Byrnes, Lorin is survived by Shirley, his wife of 67 years, and children Colleen (Dick) Kennedy, Heather (Jack) Piett, Judi (Mike) Gay, Jean (Lyle) Korinetz, 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The Memorial Service for Lorin will be Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 1:30 pm from Saskatoon Funeral Home with The Rev. Dianne Mesh officiating.
