Obituary of Joyce Elaine Thomas
Elaine’s husband Bruce sadly announces that her death occurred on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Oliver Lodge. Elaine was raised on the family farm in the Bagley District close to Melfort. She was predeceased by her parents Oscar and Anna Berstad, and her siblings Thelma and Roy. Elaine moved to Saskatoon with a friend to attend Teachers College and they boarded at the Thomas home. Bruce and Elaine were married in the Melfort United Church on July 16, 1956 and made their home in Saskatoon where Bruce joined his parents in operating Mayfair Hardware and Elaine started her teaching career. She taught in the Saskatoon Public School System from 1954 – 1978. After many years in the classroom Elaine switched to the school library. After retirement she went into business, first at Mayfair Cottage next to the hardware store, then Midtown and the Bessborough. She enjoyed the lovely and unique gifts she offered her many customers. After the Bessborough closed their gift shop she retire once again. A strong and dedicated member of Mayfair United Church she became a staff associate and licensed lay preacher and conducted many funerals as long as she was able. Elaine was a graceful ballroom dancer, world traveler and an elegant and fashionable dresser. She was intelligent and independent, a woman of vision and good humour. She is survived by her husband Bruce, her brother Donald, her brother-in-law Bob and their families. The Funeral Service will take place on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 10:00 am at Mayfair United Church, conducted by Rev. David Moors. Following a reception interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
