Obituary of Margaret Catherine Leaker

With sadness the family announces the passing of Margaret Leaker (Bone) in Saskatoon, February 18, 2018. A Memorial service will be held March 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at McClure United Church, 4025 Taylor St. E., Saskatoon. A reception will follow. Margaret passed away one day after her 102nd birthday. She pursued a career in teaching which started in the one-room school of Egremont, near Rosetown. Later, she taught primary classes in Lacadena and Tugaske. In 1942, she married Alvin Leaker from Tugaske who had joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. The young bride and groom spent their honeymoon on a train travelling to the west coast of B.C. where Alvin was stationed with the RCAF at Bella Bella. When Alvin transferred to Patricia Bay on Vancouver Island, Margaret taught in a local school at Deep Cove until the birth of their eldest child, Anne. After Alvin's discharge from the RCAF, the young family travelled to Saskatchewan in a Model A Ford. They returned to the prairies to continue the farming life interrupted by the war. Their second child Glen was born in 1947. In 1954, a farm accident claimed Alvin's life. Margaret and her children moved to Saskatoon where Margaret continued studies in Education. After graduation from the U. of S., Margaret was employed as a teacher and counsellor at Bedford Road Collegiate. She took a year away from teaching to attend Arizona State University where she completed a Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counselling. On her return to Saskatoon, she joined the staff at Evan Hardy Collegiate where she taught until her retirement. Margaret lived a long life of generosity to all and volunteer service to church and community. She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin (1954), her son Glen (2003), sisters Jane (1981) and Ella (2006), brother Lloyd (2013), and parents John (1968) and Mary Bone (1976). She is survived by her sister Georgina Bone, daughter Anne Neufeld (Ed), grandsons Paul and Michael (Heather) and great- grandchildren Emma and Ben.
