PRAIRIE VOICE
The prairie has a voice
that speaks to her own.
It is there beyond and within
the voice of wind in winter,
of rain on summer soil,
of leaves in autumn
and birds in spring.
It lingers beyond the thunder
or under the frozen crunch of snow.
This is the voice of a loved one
that reaches across the miles
to grasp the inner yearning
in a warmth as close
as mist wrapped days
or log fire cabin night.
This is a voice like the mystic's
where more is asked
than told.
This is the voice of the prairie
that speaks to her own.
