Obituary of Joseph Shuya

Joseph Shuya 1929-2017 It is with very heavy hearts we say goodbye to Joseph (Joe). At the age of 87 he succumbed to an illness after a short battle. Survived by his wife Emily of 61 years of marriage, his son Terry and his granddaughter Nicole and grandson Mark (Karen), his sisters Tena, Stephanie (Rudy), Emily, Jeanne (Jim) and brothers Harry (Anne) and John, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents and his daughter Beverly and his brothers Bill and Sam and sisters Pauline, Helen, Sylvia and Mary. Joe was born in High Tor Saskatchewan of his parents Mike and Julia and lived there until his teens when the family moved to Kelvington Saskatchewan to farm. Later when his father passed away he moved to Wadena for a short time, and then moved to Regina where he met his wife Emily. After they were married they moved to Saskatoon where Joe accepted a job as a front end alignment specialist for Dominion motors. He later partnered with a friend to open a service station called “Canadian Tire” for a few years, before finishing his mechanic career at Mid-City Motors. He switched careers to become a watch repairman at Simpsons Sears for about 10 years. He then set up his own watch repair business for a number of years before accepting a position at the University of Saskatchewan as a Caretaker Supervisor until he retired in 1994. He was member of the Wildlife Federation competing in handgun competitions. During his younger years he played hockey for the Kelvington Wheat Kings where he earned the nickname Joe (the hip) Shuya. He also was in a band that played at dances at various towns from which he continued to be passionate about playing the mandolin, guitar, banjo and violin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society (101-440 2nd Ave North, Saskatoon) or the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation (1900 701 Queen St, Saskatoon).
