Obituary of Stella Hickie
Stella Hickie (nee Fundytus)
May 3, 1943 – May 16, 2017
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of mom’s passing. She took her beautiful step into eternity early in the morning on Tuesday, May 16 with the sun streaming brightly through the window of her room in Palliative Care at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon. Mom passed in peace with love and gentleness surrounding her. We are grateful.
Stella is survived by her son Darryl Hickie, his children Alyssa and Mackenzie, and their mother Charlene Knibbs Hickie; her daughter Corinne and son-in law Bob Kirkpatrick, and their children Stephanie, Katie and Mary; her brothers William of Edmonton, Joe (Trudy) of Missisauga, and Mike of Edmonton; her sisters Olga Bailey of Trochu, AB, Lynn (Wayne) Harper of Edmonton, Agnes Petrie of Vegreville, AB; sisters-in-law Nadia of Vegreville, and Vera of Lavoy, AB; and numerous nieces and nephews. Stella was precedeased by her parents Nicholas and Elsie Fundytus; brothers Stan (Adeline), Frank, Harry and Walter; sisters Mary, Josie and Anna (Arnold) and Irene.
Mom served in the Armed Forces – Air Force from 1960-63 as a medic. She transferred her training into the civilian world to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, a career that spanned more than four decades. Prior to and after her retirement, she found complete joy in nurturing and caring for her five granddaughters by being present in their daily lives. It was a blessing for us and for her. Throughout her life, mom was a very social person, enjoying times with friends and family at home and at the lake. Her strong character served her well during her final few months when diagnosed with cancer. The family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nursing staff at RUH and then finally the amazing staff in the Palliative Care unit at St. Paul’s Hospital. Mom was also blessed in her final weeks with tremendous support from Fr. Phong Pham, and Fr. Rheal Bussiere and the spiritual care staff at both hospitals.
