Obituary of Hazel Nelson

Hazel Ina Nelson (Edelman) January 22, 1927 – February 10, 2017 The family of Hazel Nelson is saddened to announce her passing at RUH 6200 with her family by her side on Friday, February 10th, 2017. We extend a sincere thank you to the staff on 6200 for their care and compassion to our beautiful loved one. Hazel was born the 4th of 10 children to the late Agnes & Fred Edelman and lived her entire life in Saskatoon. After the passing of her husband Bert Nelson in December 2011, Hazel moved to the Ilarian Residence where she was so proud of her suite and the many new friends she made over the past 4 ½ years. From a young age, Hazel worked hard her entire life and was a dedicated employee whatever she tackled. After a high school day, she worked at Thames Studios, and then Johnson Seymore Photos. She owned and operated with Bert “The Green Door Lunch” on 3rd Avenue. She then sold the business and started working at University Hospital as a supervisor in Housekeeping. From there she moved to St. Paul’s Hospital to become the Executive Director of Housekeeping, and later in her career also became the Director of Laundry Services Hazel was a devoted member of Calvin Goforth Presbyterian Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher in her early years, and later as a member of the Board. She was a member of the Soroptimists Saskatoon, the CNRA Women’s ’Auxiliary, the CN Pensioners Assoc., the Widows’ Club, and a Life Time Member of the Saskatoon Highland Dancing Assoc. Hazel devoted many hours to volunteering for many organizations including ringing the bells at Christmas for the Salvation Army. When Hazel wasn’t working, she enjoyed bowling with Bert, playing Tuesday evening Bunco with her gal pals, Wednesday night cards with the gang, and meeting her good friend Polly for lunch on Saturdays. She was a great cook and made the best flapper pies in the world. Together Hazel and Bert travelled extensively, seeing many parts of the world. The family cabin on Aquadeo Beach at Jackfish Lake was their pride and joy for over 59 years. There they hosted many family and friends, had golf memberships, and worked hard on establishing a “wonderful legacy” for the family to continue to gather and enjoy the toils of their hard work. Hazel was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Bert Nelson, her parents Agnes & Fred Edelman, stepmother Alberta Horn Edelman, brothers Doug, Albert, Larry, and her four sisters and their husbands: Lillian & Vince Woodhead, Audrey & Bobby Dean, Mildred & Joe Sayers, and Eunice Schimanowsky. Her brothers-in-law, William (Bill) Nelson, Harold Nelson, and Jim McGunigal. Left to cherish the wonderful memories of this great lady are her son, Bill Nelson, her daughter, Sue Hicks (Jerry VanLambalgen), four grandchildren: Dallas Nelson Hicks, Stacey Hicks Clark (Blake), Leanne Nelson Smith (Tim), and Christopher Nelson & their mother Brenda Aikenhead (Glen) , 2 step granddaughters, Terri VanLambalgen (Calvin), and Tammy Vanlambalgen (Kevin); great grandchildren, Parker, Hailey, Katelyn, & Maya Hicks; Kya & Jinnoah Smith, and 4 step great grandchildren, Austin, Chase, Taylor & Ruby. Her sister Ethel (Keith) Read, brother Stewart (Jean) Edelman, and sisters-in law, Francis Edelman and Shirley McGunigal, along with many close cousins, nieces, and nephews.
