Joan Browne

Obituary of Joan Mary Browne

Joan Browne was born in 1922 in the family home on Ave. H in Saskatoon. She was the daughter of A. H. (Fred) and Hettie Browne who had emigrated from Great Britain in the early 1900’s. Fred Browne was Saskatoon’s first city gardener. Joan lived most of her life here and was a strong supporter of the city. She passed away peacefully at City Hospital on Dec. 4, 2017. Earning both BA and BEd degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, Joan taught in Perdue Sask and then many years at Walter Murray Collegiate Institute in Saskatoon. As such, she mentored many fortunate students. Joan is remembered for her kind, giving and hospitable nature. Her many friends include former students and neighbours. She took delight in her home and garden and especially the many dogs who shared her life over the years. Being an avid animal lover, Joan was a valued member of the Saskatoon SPCA Auxiliary. Joan was predeceased by her parents and sisters Dorothea and Margaret. Very special thanks is extended to Lorette Smith for her wonderful care in Joan’s final years. Friends so wishing may make donations in Joan’s memory to the A. H. Browne Memorial Scholarship in Horticulture, the Saskatoon SPCA or to a charity of one’s choice.
