Obituary of Lawrence Patrick Grennan

Lawrence Patrick Redmond Grennan passed away in Saskatoon at his residence, Veteran’s Village, on Monday, November 20, 2017. He was born on May 26, 1924 in Montreal, QC as the youngest of four children of Charles and Margaret (nee Murray) Genois. He was the last surviving member of his family being predeceased by his parents, his sisters; Kathleen (Glenn) Heatlie and Patricia (in infancy); and his brother Murray (Jean). He is survived by cousins and nephews in Ontario and British Columbia. Lawrence was a founding member of No. 3 Sgn, Air Cadets of Canada, Montreal, serving with them from 1941 – 1943. He then saw Active Service with the RCAF from 1943 – 1945. After the war he served with the RCAF Auxiliary and the CIntC (CA(M)) form 1950 – 1963. Among other awards, he received the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD), and retired with the Rank of Captain. He spent most of his business career with the Bell Canada Treasury Department from 1950 – 1978 in Montreal and Toronto. He joined the Order of St. Benedict at St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster, SK in 1978 and remained there until 1989. He became a Lay Oblate of the Abbey in 1991. Lawrence joined the Knights of Columbus, Montreal Council No. 284 in 1946, and became an Honorary Life Member of the Order in 1978. In recent years he had been with the K of C Saskatoon Council No. 1517. Lawrence loved signing, especially with Barbershop Harmony. He joined SPEBSQSA Inc. in Montreal in 1956, continuing with East York, ON and the Chimo Chordsmen in Saskatoon. He became a Life Member of the Society in 1972, and recently transferred to the Frank Thorne Chapter-at-Large. On arriving in Saskatoon in 1989, Lawrence joined the 10:00 AM Choir at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Cathedral and sang there until 2013. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan (279 3rd Ave. N. Saskatoon SK S7K 2H7) or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
