Obituary of Betty McIver

Betty (Elizabeth) McIver passed away on Monday, November 20 at Prairie Spring Care Home just six weeks shy of her 100th birthday. We were so fortunate to have her with us for such a long time so we could appreciate the strong woman that she was. Mom spent her early years on a farm in Fairy Glen, Saskatchewan, one of 9 children. After graduating from high school, she decided that she needed a new challenge so she enrolled at The Grey Nuns in Regina in 1941 and graduated as an RN in 1944. After a short stint working in Indian Head, she and her two friends decided being nurses in Vancouver and Montreal looked more interesting. Two years later she was back in Indian Head where she met Roy and they were married in 1950. She loved being a stay at home Mom, raising us, looking out for Dad, being active in the community with church, golfing, curling, playing bridge and always watching the Blue Jays. She and Dad had some wonderful holidays together but they really enjoyed being at home entertaining family and friends. She made the best pastry ever, a skill she sadly could not pass on successfully to either of her children. She was predeceased by her mother and father and all eight of her brothers and sisters and her husband Roy. She is lovingly remembered by her, daughter, Norma Jean and Lucille Dubé, her son Donald and Arlene Schmalz, granddaughter, Emily, grandson Kevin and Jodie Roberts, Nancy Dill and many nieces and nephews. While we will miss her dearly, there are many wonderful memories of the loving, kind woman that she was to cherish and we recognize how fortunate friends and family were to have been touched by her for nearly 100 years. We would like to thank Joanne Fogarty and the staff at Prairie Spring Care Home for their exceptional kindness and care of Mom over these past three years.
